Come to the Great Lakes Taiko Center in Novi, Michigan, for a fun and free introduction to Taiko Drumming: You'll get a quick overview about different kinds of taiko drums, how to play the taiko, and some basic rhythms. By the end of class, we will play a short song together! Children & families are welcome.

SUMMER TAIKOFIT: Cardio Exercise with Real Drumming!

Looking for summer fitness fun? Exercise with music and drums in TaikoFit! Get a good workout while drumming along to popular musical selections. No taiko or musical experience necessary to have a great time! Join us for a 4 class summer TaikoFit series.

*Novi Classes SAT (12:15-1:15pm) on 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5.

In the Lake Orion area? Check out our summer series TaikoFit classes held at the Orion Center. A set of four series will be offered this summer on WED morning (9:15am) or THU evenings (7pm).

*Orion Classes WED (9:15-10:15am) on 7/12, 7/19, 7/26, 8/2
*Orion Classes THU (7-8pm) Series #2 (7/20, 7/27, 8/3, 8/10) and Series #3 (8/17, 8/24, 8/31, 9/7)

YOUTH SUMMER TAIKO [6 classes; July - August]

Tiny Tots Taiko (MON 4:30-5pm) Students have fun with games & activities to teach the concepts of playing in a group, following directions, counting, and playing taiko drums. (Ages 3~6 yrs)

TinyTots Class Dates:  7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/14, 8/21; no class 8/7.


ADULT SUMMER TAIKO

[8 classes; June - August] 

Nagado Basics (MON 7:15-8:15pm or SAT 9-10am)
This summer taiko class helps beginners and continuing students to build and reinforce a strong foundation of taiko playing. We will focus on form, technique drills, and playing the nagado taiko with uchi komi - using your whole body to get a full and powerful sound from the drum.

Basics MON Class Dates:  6/19, 6/26, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/14, 8/21; no classes on 7/3, 8/7.

Basics SAT Class Dates:  6/17, 6/24, 7/1, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, 8/19; no classes on 7/8, 8/12. 

 

*New* ADULT TAIKO INTENSIVES [4 weeks each session]  

Odaiko Techniques (July-August session: TUE 7-9pm or SAT 10:15am-12:15pm)
The odaiko, with its powerful sound, is the focal point of almost every taiko performance. Odaiko players are challenged to demonstrate flexibility and control of form. Learn proper techniques and style for playing the "Big Drum". Note: this intensive is a prerequisite for playing the odaiko part in future classes. Limit of 4 students per class.  

Odaiko TUE Class Dates:  7/27*THU, 8/1, 8/15, 8/22; no class on 8/8

Odaiko SAT Class Dates:  7/22, 7/29, 8/5, 8/19; no class on 8/12

 

*New* HULA CLASS [8 classes; June - August]

Hula with Molly (SAT 1:15-2:45pm)
This summer we are excited to offer a Hula arts class taught by Molly Eguchi, one of our Taiko Center students and a skilled Hula dancer. In this fun class introducing Hula, Molly will teach fundamental steps for a basic dance and introduce accompanying rhythms played on the ipu - a traditional hand drum made from a gourd. She will also teach a simple oli (poetic Hawaiian chant).

Hula SAT Class Dates:  6/17, 6/24, 7/1, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, 8/12* (rescheduled last class); no class on 7/8.

FAQs: About Learning Taiko Drumming in Michigan

What is taiko drumming? Japanese Taiko drumming combines music, communication skills, teamwork and a touch of martial arts to create a fun and unique art form. Check out our taiko videos on YouTube!

Do I need to read music? No, it is not required. Our instructors teach in such a way that musicians and non-musicians alike can enjoy playing music together in a group.

Are there any age limits? We offer classes for almost every age, from 3 to 103, including options for Pre-schoolers, Youth, and Adult classes.

5:15 - 6:15 PM Youth Intro Taiko (ages 6-and up)
