2018 Summer Class Descriptions

Nagado Basics (all levels):  Reinforce and improve your nagado skills while having fun and composing a short piece as a class! Open to all levels. Instructor: Brian Sole. 8 Classes (MON nights or SAT mornings, no classes 7/2 & 7/28) @GLTC in Novi, MI.

Swing Shime Daiko (Int/Adv):  Half of the songs in our Taiko Center’s repertoire have a swing beat, starting with Mushi Okuri, the first song most of us learned.  This class aims to improve our tempo-keeping, and the loud/quiet dynamics that bring a jiuchi line to life, all while maintaining that mysterious, hard to describe light & festive feel that swing songs should have. Recommended for intermediate to advanced level students. Instructor: Ken Brady. 8 Classes (TUE nights, no class 7/3) @GLTC in Novi, MI.

Odaiko Form & Basics (Int/Adv):  Learn, refine, improve your Odaiko playing techniques. We will focus on basic form, relaxation and playing "big". The class will incorporate different drills and concepts learned will be applied in a short performance piece. Recommended for intermediate to advanced level students. Instructor: Brian Sole. 8 Classes (SAT mornings, no class 7/28) @GLTC in Novi, MI.

Hula Class with Molly (all levels):  Learn fundamental Hula dance elements and accompanying songs and rhythms in the context of various dance forms and musical instruments such as the ipu (a traditional gourd drum) or bamboo pu'ili sticks. Students will also explore Hawaiian history, culture and language relevant to the Hula arts, such as learning the meaning behind the mele (song or chant) of a dance. Open to new and continuing Hula students. Instructor: Molly Eguchi, Hula teacher and taiko player. 8 classes (SAT afternoons, 6/23 - 8/18, no class 7/28) @GLTC in Novi, MI.

"Taiko Play" in Ann Arbor, MI location (all levels):  Come play taiko drums with us this summer! Join us for a fun-filled hour of Japanese taiko drumming activities including basic exercises (practicing form, movement and rhythm), creative play (composing and improvising), and musical exploration (song phrasing, drumming styles, and group arrangements). Open to both new and experienced taiko students who want to develop their understanding of this dynamic art form and broaden their horizons as taiko players. We provide drums for class; you must bring or purchase your own pair of sticks (bachi) for $10. Optional practice drums (gomidaiko) will also be available for $65. Wear comfortable clothes to move in and plan to play barefoot or with indoor shoes (no street shoes). Instructors: Eileen Ho and Larry An, teachers and performing members from the Great Lakes Taiko Center. 6 Classes (MON nights, 6/25-8/6, no class 7/2) @Eberbach Cultural Arts Bldg, Ann Arbor, MI.
