Want to learn more about Taiko? Come to the Great Lakes Taiko Center in Novi, Michigan, for a fun and free introduction to Taiko Drumming: You'll get a quick overview about different kinds of taiko drums, how to play the taiko, and some basic rhythms. By the end of class, we will play a short song together! Children & families are welcome.

FAQs: About Learning Taiko Drumming in Michigan

What is taiko drumming? Japanese Taiko drumming combines music, communication skills, teamwork and a touch of martial arts to create a fun and unique art form. Check out our taiko videos on YouTube!

Do I need to read music? No, it is not required. Our instructors teach in such a way that musicians and non-musicians alike can enjoy playing music together in a group.

Are there any age limits? We offer classes for almost every age, from 3 to 103, including options for Pre-schoolers, Youth, and Adult classes.

Tiny Tots Taiko Preschool and Kindergarten students (ages 3 – 6) enjoy learning about working together as a group, counting, following directions, and taiko drumming through fun activities, songs and games. Students will learn a short performance piece to showcase on stage at the June Recital. Each class is 30 minutes in length from 4:30 – 5:00 PM on Tuesdays (2017-18) & Wednesdays (2018). Monthly fee is $50. Class materials fee $10 for a pair of taiko drum sticks.

Youth Intro to Taiko Elementary age students (ages 6 ~ 11) learn the basics of Taiko drumming through fun drills, games, and an original composition which students learn and perform on the stage at our June recital. Youth Intro to Taiko is a 60-Minute class and is offered on Tuesdays from 5:15 – 6:15 pm. The monthly class fee is $65. Class materials fee $10 for a pair of taiko drum sticks.

Intro to Japanese Taiko Drumming (Basics) 

This course will introduce new Taiko students to basic forms, techniques and rhythms in Taiko Drumming, along with musical phrasing and group arrangements. [This Intro to Taiko Basics course is a prerequisite for the next level class, Beginning Taiko.]


Novi Community Education Spring 2018 Intro Taiko class:

 7-8pm TUESDAYS 4/17-5/22 @Deerfield Elementary gym (Novi, MI) link to class here on novicommunityed.orgFee is $120 for 6 classes plus $10 materials fee for a pair of bachi/sticks. Have fun learning Japanese Taiko Drumming in this 6 week course introducing basic forms, techniques and rhythms. This class will be led by Eileen Ho from Novi's own Great Lakes Taiko Center. No drumming or musical background is necessary to start enjoying this class right away. Children ages 12 and up can sign up with a parent.

Ann Arbor Community Education & Recreation Spring 2018 Intro Taiko class:  Registration opens online March 21st.

8pm MON 4/16 Japanese Taiko Drumming: Free Hands-on Demo > link to demo registration hereAges: 16 - Adult. Taiko drumming is performed by many groups worldwide and features the powerful sound of Japanese-style drums with rhythms and movements which reflect roots in musical traditions of ancient Japan while also expressing the creativity and diversity of today's taiko artists. Join us in this fun hands-on demo to discover the joy of playing taiko! Try out different kinds of taiko drums, learn how to play the drums and some basic rhythms, and even play a short song together. No experience necessary to participate. Drums and sticks are provided for class. Wear comfortable clothes and prepare to play barefoot or with indoor shoes (no street shoes). Instructors: Eileen Ho and Larry An from the Great Lakes Taiko Center will also present a brief taiko performance.

8-9pm MONDAYS 4/23-6/4 Japanese Taiko Drumming: Intro Class @Eberbach Cultural Arts Bldg (Ann Arbor, MI) link to class here on www.a2schools.org/recedClass Fee is $119 for 6 classes (no class 5/28) plus $10 materials fee for a pair of bachi/sticks. Ages: 16 - Adult. Taiko drumming combines music, communication and teamwork, and a touch of dance and martial arts, to create a uniquely dynamic art form. Anyone can join this fun course that introduces new players to the basic form, movement, and rhythms of taiko drumming. You learn proper stance and positions at the drum, discover how to get a full sound from the drum by relaxing and playing with the whole body, use voice to practice and enhance our drumming, find a groove and play as a group with classmates, and explore the basic rhythms which we can use to compose any taiko song. No experience with drumming or music training required. We provide drums for class and you must purchase a pair of sticks called bachi. Wear comfortable clothes and plan to play barefoot or with indoor shoes (no street shoes). Materials fee $10 due to instructor for a pair of sticks/bachi; practice drum/gomidaiko (optional): $65. Instructors: Eileen Ho and Larry An, teachers and performing group members from the Great Lakes Taiko Center.



Our GLTC Youth and Adult students share in the joy of playing taiko throughout the year in classes which begin in the Fall, Holiday Party in December, continuing classes in Winter & Spring, a celebratory recital concert in June, and specialty classes in the Summer. We are excited to offer the following 2017-18 GLTC classes for continuing taiko students.

TaikoFit Cardio Drumming: a fun fitness class for everyone! 

Have fun and work up a sweat while moving to the music and beating the drums! TaikoFit Cardio Drumming classes are all about having a good time while you exercise. Instructors from the Great Lakes Taiko Center will guide your through dynamic routines with upbeat music and varying intensity options of movement and rhythm. No previous experience required. TaikoFit takes cardio drumming to the next level with added excitement and power of the booming Taiko Drums and a more intense workout from using the sturdy bachi sticks. Drums and sticks are provided.

In the Lake Orion area? Check out our TaikoFit sessions at the Orion Center. Classes taught by GLTC TaikoFit instructor Cindi Carter. Sign up for a free class and call the Orion Center at 248.391.0304 Ext 3500 to register or link below. Fee is $48 for each series of 4 classes.

Hula Class with Molly (Saturdays 1-2:30pm at Main Studio in Novi)


Open to beginners and continuing Hula students: In this fun class introducing Hula, Molly will teach fundamental steps for a basic dance and introduce accompanying rhythms played on the ipu - a traditional hand drum made from a gourd. She will also teach a simple oli (poetic Hawaiian chant) and dances with various implements such as the puili bamboo sticks. We are excited to offer this Hula arts class taught by Molly Eguchi, one of our Taiko Center students and a skilled Hula dancer.

Yoga Express with Joe (Saturdays 12:15-1:00pm at Main Studio in Novi)

YOGA EXPRESS: *New class offering* Perfect for all ages and fitness levels. Using a multitude of yoga poses and flows, this class is specifically designed for Beginner to Intermediate Yoga students to obtain maximum gains in minimum time. We’ll focus on strength, flexibility, timing, coordination and abdominal strength while also exploring the mind-body relationship, breathing techniques and inner calm.

INSTRUCTOR: Joe Mason, certified in yoga & fitness

TIME: 45 min class, SAT in the noon hour (12:15-1pm) on 2/24, 3/3, 3/10 and 3/17.
COST: $32 for series of 4 classes (starting 2/24) or $10 drop-in fee

WHAT TO BRING: exercise/yoga mat, bottled water, bath towel (optional) for extra padding and warmth, and fun-loving attitude. Expect to practice barefoot or use grip socks.
