Spring 2021: Online & Outdoors #TaikoJoy

What does playing taiko together look like for us, now more than a year into the pandemic?

The Great Lakes Taiko Center Saturday classes (Taiko at Home & Gomidaiko in the Park) and our drum sharing program (Taiko Share) represent how we can amplify, exemplify, and simplify our community commitment to continue playing taiko together, in the safest way possible and despite losing use of our original studio and storage space, by utilizing online platforms and public outdoor spaces to share in our abundance and practice of taiko joy!

Join us for our final month in the Spring 2021 season! Visit our Class Listing page.

Taiko at Home

11:00-11:45am EDT on Saturdays

6/5, 6/12, 6/19

@GLTC-Online (April & May sessions recorded)

Taiko players of all levels are welcome to join from home for this fun online class on Zoom in which we will practice basic rhythms of Japanese taiko drumming in the context of current Taiko Center study pieces. Eileen Ho of Raion Taiko will tailor our taiko practice and play sessions based on participant experience. Activities will incorporate our whole body and creative minds in the spirit of taiko together. We will also discuss options for taiko drums and bachi sticks you can use to play at home.

Come practice and play taiko outdoors in Novi (Michigan) this Spring with Larry An of Raion Taiko. Sign up for this class if you want to taiko in a lively group setting with exercises tailored to participant experience! We will also practice safety measures such as wearing masks at all times, maintaining distance between players (class size is limited), avoid sharing equipment or food/drink, not coming to class if you or your contacts have been ill in the last 14 days, and cancelling class in the event of inclement weather. Bring your own bachi sticks; gomidaiko practice drums will be provided for participants.

Taiko Share

GLTC Members may contact us about borrowing taiko equipment for use during class and/or to take home. This is a pilot program to provide our taiko players, whether a beginning student or seasoned performer, with options to borrow instruments available from the Great Lakes Taiko Center or other sharing members…a taiko lending library program!
